Before we go any further...in case you are unaware...you MUST have the complete BMW factory rack (see pic at right) for our backrest system to work. Comprende? Good.. Lets proceed.

I have designed this setup to be an easy install so minimum tools will be required. All you'll really need is a set of hex wrenches. Install should take you under 15 minutes... FYI... this backrest will fit both the R1100R and R850R that use this rack. As I do NOT have access to an R1100R, I can NOT say for sure, but I THINK our bracket can be installed with the factory rack on the bike. However, this install guide will show you how to install it with the rack OFF the bike which I would think would be much easier. Same principle. Either way... a no brainer.
Note: Pics are of early prototype brackets which were powder coated..Production pieces have a soft Rhino Coating.

Parts/Materials Needed:
(1) R1100R/R850R Stealth Backrest Kit from Pirates' Lair
(4) 6 x 40mm screws (furnished)
(4) 6 x 16mm socket cap screws
(furnished)
(1) kit hex wrenches
(1) ratchet or hex driver
(1) bottle Blue strength Loctite
(1) Quick release Plastic Knob (furnished)

Step #1: Getting Started

After your first beer, remove the (4) factory screws that hold the support brackets on the rear rack. These will be replaced by the furnished 6 x 16mm screws.

Step #2: Installing R1100R/850R Rack/Backing Plate

Now, while holding the factory side brackets in position, take the furnished stainless steel backing plate and lay it on top of the side brackets and install with the furnished (4) 6 x 16mm screws.

I suggest you use Blue strength Loctite. Do NOT tighten. Leave them loose for now...

Step #3: Installing R1100R/R850R Stealth Rack

OK... The backing plate is in position with the screws still loose. Now, place the R1100R Stealth bracket on top of your factory rack with screw holes facing you. If you are doing this install with the rack off the bike.. place the bracket on the bottom as shown in pic to right. Line up the holes...

Install all (4) of the furnished 6 x 40mm screws. I suggest you use Blue strength Loctite.

Step #4: Final Step... Your Done!!

First..hand tighten the (4) 6 x 16 outer screws, then the (4) inner 6 x 40mm screws. Now using your hex wrench or ratchet, snug them down then add a quarter turn.... and for gods sake... use common sense. The factory rack is lightweight aluminum so if you are ape-like with your tightening.. you'll strip something. * Consider yourself forewarned.

Once you have all your bolts tight.. you're either done or all you need do is reinstall the rack to the bike.

A job well done.. time for the other beer.. Sit back and revel in your own magnificence.

Step 5: Backrest Usage
1. Slide the backrest all the way in. There is only one position.
2. Reach underneath and lock it in using either the furnished 1/4" screw ..or the furnished Quick Release Knob. Only one securing screw is needed.

Hope you and your passenger enjoy it. If possible.. send pics and comments of our backrest on your bike. We'll add to the website.
