Take me home, El Capitan!

"Gather 'round, lads.... gather 'round"...
Burt Lancaster / The Crimson Pirate (1952)

Around the 1st or 15th of each month, when I deem you are worthy, we put out our cheesy newsletter to inform the masses as to what's happening in the BMW K1300S, K1200S, GT, R, RS, S1000RR world and of course... Pirates' Lair. How else are you going to find out? If you want to subscribe and have these sent via e-mail to your home or office just let us know at pirate@acelink.net .. otherwise you'll get 95% of it here. Why only 95%? Because I tend to tell the brutal truth as I see it on many issues/products and while I don't mind spewing "my opinion" into your home, office or cell, I have no desire to slam, insult, or malign any company, individual, competitor in public.. unless they blatantly deserve it.

Warning:
While I do try to add a little humor in every newsletter, some of my language may offend the mild mannered or meek amongst us. If you are offended easily I suggest you stop reading here and look elsewhere for your written info-tainment. So it is written.. so let it be done....

The Latest Cheesy Pirates' Lair Newsletter: April / May 2010

Fellow esteemed and quasi-esteemed motorcyclists.... ..A famous (and slightly edited ) movie moment to start the month..... (Vaya con dios, Patrick!)

FBI agent, Johnny Utah and his partner have tracked the surfing bank robbers..."the Ex Presidents" to the airport where they are loading the plane with the bags of money and preparing to make their final getaway. Johnny approaches their leader, Bodhi and tries to buy a little time while his partner gets into position for the takedown. The only downside.. Bodhi has something Johnny wants and it's the ace up his sleeve.

Johnny Utah: I'm not armed. [lifts up his shirt to Bodhi]
Bodhi: But, you're not alone.
Johnny Utah: Good guess. There is a guy on you now. [pause]
Johnny Utah: Where is Roach?
Bodhi: He's around somewhere. Listen Johnny, we're in a kind of a hurry; is there anything you need?
Johnny Utah: You gotta tell me where the Cheesy Pirates Lair Newsletter is.
Bodhi: Oh yeah, and let my policy expire. Good idea.
Johnny Utah: Look Bodhi, people are in need of accessories, the ride is over.
Bodhi: Oh, no no no. I say when it's over.
Johnny Utah: They will nail you wherever you land. They'll use something new called radar, maybe you've heard of it.
Johnny Utah: Bodhi, I know you man. When they fall on you, you won't back down and they'll have to burn your ass to the ground.
Bodhi: S#@* happens.
Johnny Utah: You got a death wish. You want to ride to glory, fine. But, don't take the newsletter with you. It's particularly cheesy this month. I'm begging you. Tell me where it is, and I walk away.
Bodhi: You walk away?
Johnny Utah: I walk away.
Bodhi: That's beautiful Johnny.

Bodhi .. Patrick Swayze / Johnny Utah... Keanu Reeves /   Point Break (1991)

If you want the ultimate, you've got to be willing to pay the ultimate price. It's not tragic to die doing what you love.

Picture Of The Month! Nevada's Great Basin on Highway 50! (Click Image for a Larger View)

Every month customers send us killer photos and I see no reason to keep them to myself so what better way to say thanks for sharing than to post them in this Picture of the Month spot..

Our April/May POTM was contributed by Doug Smith. He says of this shot..“This shot is a spot along the road on a trip from the SF Bay area to Denver for a business meeting in June of ‘09.  The spot is on Highway 50 headed up and east out of Nevada’s Great Basin over Sacramento Pass on the way to the Utah line, about 45 miles east of Ely.  The unusual green vegetation in the picture reflects some late rain in the previous weeks, still some small ponds along the flats.  The day’s ride was Reno to Provo, with US-40 through Vernal and Steamboat Springs to Denver the next day.  A better than average bizz trip.  Just one stretch of showers the whole way, from Winter Park to Idaho Springs over Berthoud Pass, otherwise excellent weather and riding."

If you would like to contribute your own"worthy" shot for our newsletter, here's what I'll need. First.. just email me 1 or 2 of your best digital shots. It'll need to be at least 800x600 in size or larger and preferably A. Of a BMW K1200S or K1300S, K1200RS, K1200R, R Sport, or any model year K1200GT or K1300GT and B. In focus.

New BMW Motorcycle Magazine In The USA: Heads Up!

News Flash .. Looks like there's gonna be a new BMW Motorcycle Magazine hitting the US newsstands this month... woohoo!!  BMW Motorcycle Magazine. It's an English version of Germany's popular BMW Motorrader. Unlike BMWON magazine, this new rag (they tell me) will be less stodgy and more sport bike oriented as are most of us. We'll see. .. It'll probably be worth a look and/or support. Here's the big skinny...

Tucson, Arizona, March 15 : German publisher of motorcycle magazines, MO Medien Verlag, has joined with U.S. publisher Vivid Image Publications, LLC, to expand the popular English-language publication, BMW Motorcycle Magazine. The new combined issue, due out in April 2010, will increase publication, doubling to four issues per year to better cover each of the four seasons of riding while retaining its well-known quality content, photography and printing.

BMW Motorcycle Magazine, the English-language version of Germany's popular BMW Motorrader, has been on the market since 2007, garnering both success and respect for its professional writing, in-depth tech and engineering articles, behind-the-scenes factory news, riders tests, and professional industry interviews. This first-hand content, direct from the Bavarian heart of BMW, will remain at the core of the magazine.

The new, joint effort magazine will now be published in the United States by Vivid Image Publications, LLC. Editor Sandy Cohen brings 30 years of publishing experience and over a decade of knowledge of the BMW community as Managing Editor of the popular BMW Owners News magazine, the official publication of the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America. Added on-site coverage of news, events, destinations and products will complement the German content and truly reflect the international readership. This unique, independent publication will bring together a team of respected and experienced writers with unrivalled passion for the BMW motorcycle.

A new website, bmwmcmag.com, will enhance the magazine with full service functions of breaking news, resources, community involvement and customer service. For more information about BMW Motorcycle Magazine, go to bmwmcmag.com or contact Sandy Cohen at (520) 407-6758. BMW Motorcycle Magazine is not affiliated with any club, organization, BMW corporation, or the Obama administration.

Back In The Saddle! Pirates Lair & Staintune Ride Again!

Wow. What a difference a few weeks can make. Not 2 weeks ago, we got word from the lone US importer of Staintune exhausts that effective immediately only they would offer the Staintune product line to the US masses. There would be no more wholesaling to vendors... any vendors. No more dealer pricing. We were told that this was due to the poor standings of the Euro in the world economy, which made no since to us since the product comes out of Australia.. not Europe. What the f@#? Who's the genius doing the numbers on their end? Ben Bernanke? We assumed that the bad news came directly from corporate Staintune or possibly yet another brilliant anti-small business idea coming from the Obama administration meant to stimulate the economy.

This caught us totally off guard as we've been doing business with Staintune since dinosaurs roamed the earth and have had a good relationship with the importer. If the economic ramifications for my lifestyle weren't enough to proliferate ED.. it gets worse. We have links to their products on over 400+ pages of our website. Doh! Removing each and every one of them would be like trying to remove "thug" from Mike Tyson.
Rather than ponder the implications on the tree of woe.. I sucked it up and started the long arduous process of expunging the references to Staintune on our site starting with some notices on the key pages that we no longer can get Staintune exhausts.

Lo and behold.. this week I got a note from Staintune's head sales manager in Australia. He was shocked and baffled after reading the notices on my web site. Apparently they had given no such orders to the lone importer to stop selling to us. Apparently things are just fine at Staintune. Apparently the problem(s) originated with the importer. I spy a Gordon Ghekko-like back-door greed driven power-play. So be it. The good news is... from this day forward, Pirates Lair will be doing business directly with Australia. As of today.. Staintunes are back on our menu and (as Aerosmith's Steve Tyler would croon..).. "I'm back... back in the saddle again.."

Ilmberger Carbon Fiber for the S1000RR! Swag Central at Pirates Lair!

You want Carbon Fiber for your BMW S1000RR? Are we not men?! Well.. Pirates' Lair just picked up the entire Ilmberger Carbon Fiber Product line. We now offer over 20 pieces of luscious carbon fiber for the mighty S1000RR. Each piece is as light as mountain air and offers a deep, hand rubbed gloss finish for the ultimate in weight loss, good looks, and long lasting chubs.

Since 1990 Ilmberger has been producing high-quality carbon fiber products, equaling OEM quality and sold through OEM accessory catalogs. Expect a UV protective coating on every piece. Used by top international racers, Ilmberger products are the highest quality carbon fiber we have found. Whether you’re going racing, want to lose a few ounces, or are improving the appearance of your machine, Ilmberger carbon fiber is the best you can buy!

Ilmberger carbon fiber is TUV/ABE approved. What the f@#* does a European standard mean to us here in the good ole U.S.? It means that Ilmberger carbon fiber is the highest quality, and fits the best. Ilmberger is also the only carbon fiber manufacturer to use Kunststoffbeschichtet, or plastic powder coating, on their parts. This finish is much more resistant to scratching than standard clear-coat finishes, blocks UV rays that can damage your carbon fiber over time, is a better base for painting, and improves the appearance of each part. Yes.. this swag ain't cheap, but we all know.. you get what you pay for.

What's in your wallet?

What's New In the K12 / K13 / S1000RR No-Spin Zone

I should note that as the RS and first generation GT has been discontinued, I receive less and less news of any new products for them.. I mention this as a few semi-loyal subscribers have accused me of abandoning our roots.. Not true.. I only report what's going on.. Don't shoot the messenger.. I will NEVER abandon the K1200RS crowd. It appears that the times.. they are a changin.' Deal with it. Also.. a special thx to www.I-BMW.com, www.K-Bikes.com , and www.BMWK1200S.com for the information & pictures I regularly pilfer from these sites..

1. If you have a new BMW S1000RR...sooner or later .. probably sooner, you're gonna need a radar detector mount. The good news is.. we just learned that the TECHMOUNT S1000RR Euro Radar Detector Mount is in production and should be available in about 4 weeks. The Techmount 55mm "Euro" mount is impressive even by my anal standards. They will offer these in both silver or black anodized finishes. The Euro Mount system is designed to clamp onto the top of the S1000RR fork tubes for an unobtrusive look and unobstructed view of all your dash functions. You can mount the unit on either the left or right hand sides (or both) giving you install flexibility. Another cool feature... as the mount has two ball bearings, you can adjust both the height and angle of the platform to your sick, demented needs. Install is chimp easy with no mods or engineering diploma needed. Kits include velcro and tools. This is the mount I use on my 1098. You'll also be able to get these from the friendly people at Pirates' Lair! Price will be around $80.US

2. Yes.. it seems like virtually all the new news I have this month is about the S1000RR.... Don't shoot the messenger.. I'm just informing. With that said.. . Woodcraft just released a chit-load of BMW S1000RR racing parts including some rearsets. Woodcraft has always been known to me as a racer friendly brand and they put out some great products although not the classiest or sexiest visually..

3. The bad-ass looking Remus Titanium HyperCone Slip-On for the S1000RR is now available in the US.

4. If you are thinking about an oil change for your BMW K1200S... you're gonna need an oil filter. If you don't have a dealer handy, like me... NAPAOnline.com offers one of their Powersports filters that'll work perfectly... Cost is $17.US If this link doesn't work... Go to their web site and type in the part number... Part Number: PFI PS7936

5. Performance exhaust specialist BOS has developed a MotoGP style slip-on silencer for BMW’s 193bhp S1000RR superbike. Like all BOS exhaust systems, the S1000RR silencer features a removable dB eater, which can be left in place for road use or removed for maximum power gains and a ‘full sport’ sound when on track. I love the look.

6. For a very well done How-To Install Lite Buddys on a K1300S.. Click Here..

7. BMW S1000RR Tech Spec Tank Protector Kits are now available in 3 piece kits..Both sides of the tank and a center tank protector. If I had the new bike.. this would be the first accessory I'd add.

8. Japan's Sato Racing will have a rearset kit available for the .. yes.. you guessed it,... S1000RR in May. Here's kinda what they'll look like...Sweet!! Feel the chub.

9. Jay Leno Rides/Discusses The "S1000RR"!! This is a fun clip! Jay Leno first discussing the "RR" with two of the crew at Long Beach BMW. But the 2nd half of the video is amazing, watching (and listening to Leno) ride the "RR" thru the streets of L.A. Some nice footage riding thru the streets of L.A. (and the freeway). He has some interesting dialogue talking into the mic while riding - but then, he's Jay Leno! This might be the best example/advertisement yet for BMW as a motorcycle to ride other than the track vs. what one of the tech's said at the beginning of the vid. Thx, Miles.

10. I don't know about you, but IMHO nothing goes together better than good lookin' babes and motorcycles.. except perhaps a bottle of warm AstroGlide, twins in cheerleader outfits, and Quaaludes..Woohoo!!.. er.. where was I?.. O, yea... Check out this waaay cool photo shoot from VisorDown.com .. Leslie Porterfield meets BMW S1000RR! Who the f@#* is Leslie Porterfield? .. She's the world's fastest woman on two wheels. A Bonneville salt flats heroine.

11. It's not pretty but if you're looking for an option for mounting a PDA, GPS, or radar detector on a S1000RR... Verholen has come up with something that looks well.. I'll let you be the judge. "Sleek" isn't exactly the adjective I'd use but it sure looks functional.

12. Fresh out of the oven from the Motorcycle.com website... 2010 BMW K1300S vs Honda VFR1200F Shootout

13. MRA has recently introduced a double bubble racing screen for the BMW S1000RR in clear, smoke grey, blue, and shadow line black. The screens aren’t shippable from MRA yet, but should be released soon. Price has not been announced.

14. Barcelona-based PUIG has launched the new Z-Racing screen for the best BMW sport bike yet: the S1000RR. The windscreen is made of 3mm High Impact acrylic, which is one of the best grades of acrylic and provides strength and flexibility to the screen. The new Z-Racing design has been tested on the Virtual Wind Tunnel and offers a great improvement on aerodynamics (12.2% better than OEM) and a better wind protection. It uses the stock hardware and does not need any modification. Moreover, the screen follows the OEM design at the bottom on the ram in-take. Price is under $100.

What's New at Pirates' Lair?

1. Welcome, my friends to the 200HP club! Honestly, I never thought I'd live to see the day. New to our menu...Remus S1000RR HexaCone Titanium Full Exhaust Perfected on the race tracks of Europe.. witness the bad-ass Remus Titanium HexaCone Full System for the king of superbikes...the BMW S1000RR. Stock bike just doesn't rock your world? Tired of low flying aircraft showing you their ass? Have a small penis and need to compensate? or just want to be all you can be? Whatever the reason.. we got you covered. The benefits of the Remus Ti HexaCone full system are: Ultra Lightweight... Deep Sound... High quality materials.. Godlike power.. The S1000RR Remus HexaCone full exhaust system is available in full Titanium only. While the header and canister are titanium, the canister comes with a Carbon Fiber end cap. Sweet. All mounting hardware is included. Bike does NOT retain heat shield. Sweet. The Remus HexaCone does eliminate the catalytic converter. Your O2 sensor will now plug into your new Titanium header. Dyno Chart..Click Here So.. what's in your wallet? Price to your door is a lofty $2195.US... Mo better!

2. 2002-2005 K1200GT Owners: Thinking about installing one of our DDM HID kits on your bike?? Of course you are. Here's some news that might influence your purchase. Your bikes use a H7 Low beam and H3 High beam. While the DDM H7 HID install is virtually plug-n-play with zero problems.. the DDM H3 kit for your high beam is not due to the weird oem adapter on these bikes. Can it be done? Absolutely, but not without a few mods. I mention this as on virtually every other motorcycle that we've seen, the kits are almost plug-n-play. Consider yourself informed.

BTW... A lot of customers call us asking if they should convert BOTH their high and low beams to HID. My personal opinion after speaking with numerous riders is to replace only the low beam at first. Try that and if it's not enough light for you.. then spend the bucks and upgrade the high. Virtually everyone (except the off-roading guys) tell me that converting your low beam only is plenty bright for most mortals. So it is written. So let it be done.

3. We now have the new BMW S1000RR Throttlemeister In Stock. We offer them in a textured black or silver. If I had the new bike.. this would be the first accessory I'd add.

4. We now have the new 3 piece Tech Spec Tank Protector Kits In Stock for the BMW S1000RR. If I had the new bike.. this would be the second accessory I'd add.

5. The bad-ass looking Remus Titanium HyperCone Slip-Ons for the S1000RR is now available in the US.. and we have them on our menu.

6. We just added the Two Brothers Racing BMW S1000RR V.A.L.E.™ Slip-On Exhaust System to our menu... We offer 3 canisters... Aluminum, Carbon Fiber, and Titanium. These should be available any day now..

7. If you are like me, your generic factory clutch and brake levers simply don't fit your hands properly or as well as they could and.. they look like crap. The manufacturers have to design them with a " one-size fits all" approach, but that doesn't mean you have to live with it. We just got word from the importer that we can start selling Synto Levers for our BMW S1000RR customers. The German made levers are top quality by anyone's standards with exacting specifications and tolerances for a smooth crisp feel with no slop as found on cheaper aftermarket levers. Fully adjustable 6 positions You can even adjust these on the fly! 6 colors to choose from for levers and adjusting wheel. Silver, Gold, Blue, Black, Red, & Titanium. Mix and match! Individual replacement parts are available. You deserve the best... or do you?

8. Once again, Pirates' Lair is forced to complete what BMW's designers failed to do.. and without their astronomical pay.We just added S1000RR Frame Caps by R & G Racing to our menu. This easy to install 2 piece frame cap kit (both left and right side) plugs those fugly unfinished holes leaving your bike with a more finished appearance. Install is chimp easy. Sold in pairs only. Honestly.. can you live with those ugly holes? Fits the BMW S1000RR Only.

9. Evoluzione will re-introduce the K1200S/K1300S Billet Aluminum Slave Clutch Kits to the market within the next 4 weeks and we will have them. They will fit the k1200s ('05/'08), k1200r ('06/'08), k1200r-sport ('07/'08), k1200gt ('06/'08) The clutch slave cylinder is not only a beautiful addition to the bike but a functional one as well. It has been designed to reduce effort at the lever while providing much smoother clutch engagement.

10. "They like me.. they really like me.." Check out the full page review of our R1200GS Stealth Backrest in the May 2010 Issue of Rider Magazine! and Amber didn't even have to blow anybody!! Cool.

11. As per the blurb in the top section...Pirates' Lair is again carrying the entire line of Staintune Exhaust Systems. It looks like now we can get them faster than most dealers by ordering directly from Staintune in Australia. Unlike everyone else, our prices include USPS Priority shipping in the USA. We ship internationally! International customers will be notified of shipping options and availability prior to purchase.

12. Here's one for the K1200RS and early GT owners... As of 4/6/2010 we now carry the Ilmberger Carbon Fiber K1200RS / K1200GT Hugger. We get a lot of requests for these so .. what the hell. Protect your bike from flying debris and add a little flash with this German import. FYI.. Ilmberger products are the highest quality carbon fiber we have found. This Ilmberger hugger will fit all K1200RS's and 2002-05 K1200GT's no matter what wheel size. Price is $288.US

13. Looking for a way to mount a radar detector on your BMW S1000RR, Ducati, or Aprilia? a GPS? Cell phone? Toll transponder? XM Radio? We now have Techmount Euro Mounts on the menu. IMHO.. they are sleek, stylish, and amazingly attractive unlike virtually everything else on the market. You won't be ashamed to have it on your bike. This is the mount I have on my Ducati 1098.

The design is impressive even by my anal standards. We will offer these in both silver or black anodized finishes. You can mount the unit on either the left or right hand sides (or both) giving you install flexibility. The Euro Mount system is designed to clamp onto the top of the fork tubes on European sport bikes for an unobtrusive look and unobstructed view of all your dash functions. Another cool feature... as the mount has two ball bearings, you can adjust both the height and angle of the platform to your demented needs. Install is chimp easy with no mods or engineering diploma needed. Kits include velcro and tools. Kits should be available by mid-May. They are currently in production.
