"Gather 'round, lads.... gather 'round"...
Burt Lancaster / The Crimson Pirate (1952)

Around the 1st or 15th of each month, when I deem you are worthy, we put out our cheesy newsletter to inform the masses as to what's happening in the BMW K12RS/GT/S/R world and of course... Pirates' Lair. How else are you going to find out? If you want to subscribe and have these sent via e-mail to your home or office just let us know at pirate@acelink.net .. otherwise you'll get 95% of it here. Why only 95%? Because I tend to tell the brutal truth as I see it on many issues/products and while I don't mind spewing "my opinion" into your home, office or cell, I have no desire to slam, insult, or malign any company, individual, competitor in public.. unless they blatantly deserve it. Also... something to keep in mind... My language in the email subscription version may offend the meek. Subscribe at your own risk. The on-line version is a bit more... PC..

Warning:
While I do try to add a little humor in every newsletter, some of my language may offend the mild mannered or meek amongst us. If you are offended easily I suggest you look elsewhere for your written info-tainment. So it is written.. so let it be done....

The Latest Cheesy Pirates' Lair Newsletter: February 2009

Fellow esteemed and quasi-esteemed motorcyclists.... ..A famous (and slightly edited ) movie moment to start the month.....

Dewey has been working in the studio non-stop for weeks. His opus arrangment is no closer to being complete than on day one. The daily acid trips doesn't help. Dewey's band is tired and fed up.. They've been keeping their opinions to themsleves long enough.. Somebody is about to snap. Stupidly, Dewey takes out his frustrations once again on the boys .. threatening them with their jobs.. blaming them...Big mistake. Showdown time with the Dewey Cox band...

Theo: Dewey, are you sayin' you don't need us no more?
Dewey: Not unless you can open your minds...and learn to play the f**kin' theramin.
Theo: [there's a silence between the group] F**K YOU DEWEY!
Dave: Yeah, f**k you Dewey! In twenty years, not once have you shared your Cheesy Pirates Lair Newsletters.. You don't think we like to farkle our BMWs, too?
Sam: And you never once paid for drugs! Not once!
Dave: You pay that chimp more than you pay us! I had to borrow from the chimp to get a mortgage on my home.
Theo: And those stupid siamese glass cats you get us every year for Christmas! I don't want anymore siamese glass cats!
Dewey Cox: The siamese cat is a symbol of mobility in Ancient Egypt.
Sam: F**k mobility!
Dave: F**k Ancient Egypt!
Theo: ...F**k cats!
Sam: And you never paid for drugs. Not... once.
Dave: [angrily] You slept with my wife!
Theo: You slept with me too! And I've had confused feelings about that for ten years now!
Sam: And you never ONCE paid for drugs!... Not once.

Motorcycle Rallies Banned From Myrtle Beach, S.C. : Another Nail In Our Coffin

Excuse me if I get off on saliva slinging diatribe here, but for the last couple of years I've been preaching to anyone who will listen that motorcycles are slowly but surely being legislated off the streets.
Sometimes these attempts to infringe on our two-wheel party are clandestine ... Other times it's as blatant as a slap in the face...and I'm talking about an "Ike Turner" slap. Just this week I came across another blatant display of the aforementioned "slap"..

Apparently, the mullet-heads running Myrtle Beach, South Carolina's government have decided that it does not want any further motorcycle rallies to be held in the city. They've just enacted numerous ordinances and rules to make rallies virtually unworkable. Click here for the city's website on the issue. In case my "smarter than the average bear" readers didn't know.. two of the largest US rallies are held in the city each year. I'm no personal or ideological fan of sportbike or cruiser rallies although I've attended a few, but I'm even less a fan of any city or municipality that doesn't like motorcycles and passes legislation banning peaceful congregations.

Night rider!!!

Not only is Myrtle Beach (aka.. the Redneck Riviera) banning motorcycle festivities, but check this out.. The city is no longer allowing motorcycle trailer parking on public rights-of-way within the city limits, nor at large, vacant sites. You may park trailers in hotel parking lots as long as they do not displace other guests’ vehicles. How accomodating. Also, city ordinances restrict motorcycles to no more than two vehicles per public parking space. Geezz.. They've done this under the guise of capitualating to public demand. Do you belive that for one minute?

This isn't just an isolated incident either, my friends. In Denver recently, they passed a law stating that ALL after market exhausts are illegal. Florida has just passed laws giving motorcyclists $1000 fines for speeding or improperly mounted license plates. Not cages. Just motorcycles. Anti-motorcycle dogooders in the UK are trying to pass laws as we speak requiring hidden GPS units on all imported motorcycles which would allow law enforcement agencies to contantly track and monitor the speeds of the motorcycle. Break the law and they mail you a ticket. Scary? You bet your ass. Insurance companies are actually banning some bikes from coverage and/or putting them on “scary bike” lists. I'm 53 feakin' years old (excuse the flying spital) and was recently quoted a criminally insane $2700 a year for insurance on my Ducati.. Refused coverage on another.

Contributing to the impending "big brother" scenario, the bike manufacturers are pouring accelerant on the fire by pumping out faster and more powerful bikes year after year without suggesting/offering comprehensive training for it’s potential customers. This IMHO is insane. TV shows promoting and glorifying stunting and street hooliganism don't help either. This "perfect storm" of circumstances does not bode well for us hard working street riders who are, IMHO mindlessly taking what we have for granted. Who have we got looking out for us? The toothless, cajone-less AMA. Can anyone, anywhere point to one single piece of anti-motorcycle legislation that the AMA has single-handidly squashed? I didn't think so. See where I'm going with all this? Something needs to be done to stifle this anti-two-wheel trend or in 10 years we'll be relegated to designated riding areas in pretty little parks with countless fees and restrictions heaped on us. Think I'm overstating the problem? We'll see soon enough. At the moment, nobody is doing a damn thing on our behalf. You know who I'd like to see leading the charge? The person who actually loves owning and riding motorcycles? The person with verifiable two-wheel international "gravitas?"... Jay Leno..

My recommendation as to cities like Myrtle Beach or Denver?... avoid them at all costs - boycott them.. Make them aware that you are boycotting them and why then spread the word to others. My 2 doubloons. Rant over. Spital run dry... for now.

I Don't Suck Anymore! Do You?

We've all been there... It's a warm sunny day. You and your best bud are out riding your bikes in the middle of nowhere. Not a care in the world. The best bonding experience two heterosexual males can have other than sharing twins, a bottle of baby oil, and some quaaludes. Both of you are having fun ...oblivious to your surroundings. Then unexpectedly, fate tosses you a curve and you find yourself pulled over in a secluded wooded area, all your gear is coming off, and you are exchanging sheepish glances. No words need to be spoken. One thing leads to another and before long one of you is down on his knees like Monika Lewinski reluctantly taking it in the mouth. The sucking begins. The embarrassed party is looking up thinking.. "I hope he doesn't tell anyone .. I don't do this often".. the other is looking down thinking... "I'll have a story to tell on the internet tonight....where's my camera?"  Yes.. I'm talking about running out of gas and having to siphon fuel out of your buddy's tank so you can get your ass home. What did you think I was talking about?

Ordinarily, BMW riders don't have to go through the indignity of sucking on a syphon hose as BMW's generally come with decent sized gas tanks. However many of todays Japanese or Italian bikes come up woefully short in this area and most don't even have fuel gauges. My own Ducati 1098 starts flashing "low-fuel"warnings like a Chernobyl reactor at a paltry 75 miles...Geez.. I can't even imagine how bad the mileage would be if I was riding the bike at high revs (which I'm not) or on a track... It's inexcusable.

As I have an imbedded, almost irrational fear of running out of gas I recently decided to buy some sort of portable syphon kit that I could carry with me. Did my usual anal research and learned that some leaps and bounds have been made in the industry making sucking gas into your mouth a thing of the past. Woohoo! Many vendors are now selling self-priming hoses that require nothing more than you to put one end into the source tank... the other into an empty Mountain Dew can (or whatever) then a little up and down "mastabatory-like" movements (of the hose.. NOT your penis) and viola!!.. Gas flows like the Yangtze on a rainy day. It has something to do with ball-bearings in the hose tip that release the gas one way and close it off the other. Simple.. Ingenious. I bought mine from Aerostitch.com for $24 + S&H...(part # 4986.. Pic at Right).. You can also find cheesier versions on Ebay for $7.95 + S&H. If you go to Ebay and type in SIPHON HOSE, FUEL TRANSFER.. you'll come up with a few choices. Better safe than sorry. No more fuel related fears.. No more sucking with your hetero friends watching....not that there's anything wrong with that.

Product Review: Ducati Clutch Slave Cylinder by Oberon Performance

O
ne of the perks of being in the biz is that now and then I get freebies. I never ask for them so when one magically shows up.. it's almost like Christmas!! Recently I casually mentioned in passing to my contact at Oberon Performance (located in the UK) that I loved the look of their new Ducati Clutch Slave Cylinders and would like to try one on my Ducati 1098 some day. I added that biz is slow (industry wide.. thx Barney Frank)..so it might be spring or summer before I could afford one. Low and behold a freebie appeared in my very next shipment. Kewl.

As I had a factory recall to be taken care of last week, I had my dealer install the new goodie while he had her panties down. Install time was under 30 minutes and my mechanic said it was a piece of cake. According to Oberon's website.. "The Oberon replacement clutch slave cylinder was designed to improve the performance and the looks of the original Ducati cylinder. Substantially reducing the heaviness of the original clutch action, aching arms and clunky gear changes are a thing of the past. The internal piston design, seals and breather hole have been drastically enhanced to stop leaks and leave a smoother clutch action."

To be honest... I've never for a second thought the stock 1098's clutch was heavy, nor have I experienced aching arms, or even a single "clunky" shift . Not one. In fact, the big sissy twin shifts as good or better than any bike I've ever owned so replacing the factory clutch slave was waaaaay down on my "I won't get a good night's sleep until I have one" list. However, I am a man.. therefore I farkle.

When I picked up the bike the service guy (who had taken the bike for a ride) was raving about the difference. That's always a good sign. While I admit I've only ridden the bike for an hour since picking it up due to the Arctic-type local weather.. the difference is surprisingly noticeable and pleasing. Lever action is very smooth and linear. I'd guesstimate the pull is 30-40% lighter which is always a plus. The fact that the Ducati Clutch Slave Cylinder looks trick is just rich creamy icing on the cake. So... which bikes will the Ducati Clutch Slave Cylinder fit? I asked Oberon and they said.. " if the Ducati has an existing external clutch slave cylinder, then ours will be suitable for and as a direct replacement." BTW.. They are sold here..

What's New In the K1200S / K1200GT / K1200R / K1200RS No-Spin Zone

I should note that as the RS and first generation GT has been discontinued, I receive less and less news of any new products for them.. I mention this as a few semi-loyal subscribers have accused me of abandoning our roots.. Not true.. I only report what's going on.. Don't shoot the messenger.. I will NEVER abandon the K1200RS crowd. It appears that the times.. they are a changin.' Deal with it. Also.. a special thx to www.I-BMW.com, www.K-Bikes.com , and www.BMWK1200S.com for the information & pictures I regularly pilfer from these chat sites..

1. If you own a BMW K1200GT and are looking for a way to mount PIAA's or other front end accessory lighting..you may want to check out LumaLink Custom Brackets. Looks like a chimp easy install and doesn't look quite as fugly as some mounts although "attractive" would NOT be an adjective I'd use to describe them. . Here's some verbiage off their web site should you be to lazy to actually click on the link.." Introducing the new LumaLink “T-Link” Light Brackets for motorcycles. This bracket mounts by using the tapped holes in the brake calipers. Our kit includes the standoffs to make the bracket clear the forks as well as new longer socket head cap screws for mounting. The brackets have 10 MM holes for the lights and this feature will accommodate a wide range of lights. With these brackets, the lights are positioned approximately 3” farther forward than our regular fork-mounted brackets and they are about 6” higher. This allows for greater spread of the beam. Price of the set is $125.00 and all hardware is included." Oddly.. they do NOT mention which K1200GT's these will fit..early or late versions..or both. Guess a quick phone call would enlighten..email info@lumalink.com or call them at 870.863.5653.

Can you see me now?

2. Here's some interesting news and if I get any of the following info wrong it's because I got it second hand. BMW of Santa Cruz was just sold. Bill and Mark (former BMWSC owners) are taking the Wunderlich mail order part of the business (which was run out of the dealership) to a new location in Watsonville, Ca. .. Word is that the new distributorship will be called Wunderlich America. Thx, Steve.

3. and speaking of BMW of Santa Cruz... The new owner's name is Stuart who will run the operation with his wife, Julianna. We hear they are hardcore enthusiasts. The sales transfer of the dealership is/was still pending, but if all goes well they should be under the new flag by the time this newsletter goes live. With the exception of Wunderlich, they will still have all the same goodies (BMW, Yamaha, Parts, Service, etc). Good luck to Stuart and Julianna!

4. Just pulled this info from the BMW news website.. the K13 series bikes will go on sale, at least in the UK, on Feb. 7th. Bob's Bmw (here in the US) posted the following price and options for a 2009 K1300S... Single color; Gear Shift; ESA II; Heater Grips; TPM; On Board Computer; ASC; and Luggage Grid for $17,775.

5. and speaking of the 2009 K1300S..If you've been thinking about putting the better looking 2009 K1300S exhaust on your K1200S.. bad news..According to one BMW dealer, pre-2009 exhausts will not work as the new bike has an Ex-up style butterfly valve in the exhaust system. Note sure if that info pertains to the FULL system or the slip-on canister, as well.. We'll check on that once a K1300 is available. As we all know.. most dealers usually don't know what they are talking about.

6. ...also...the air box on the K1300S is completely different than the K1200S....so the air filters are probably different as well.. (Thx Germany... Geez..)

7. Need brake pads or rotors for your aging BMW K1200RS? Sure you do. I found some killer deals on the aforementioned items over at 58Cycle Parts and Accessories. Prices look lower than any other place I've seen. The company also sells a Power Commander for the RS....

8. Superbike Magazine (in the UK) just did a brief review of the upcoming BMW K1300S ...It's all good.

9. If you are looking for an aftermarket windshield for your late model K1200GT... Check out California Scientific (out of W. Sacramento) Unlike a few others on the market.. I won't name names.. (Aeroflow or Parabellum).. these actually look pretty damn good and don't spoil the lines of the bike.. They even have this disclaimer on their site:. Competitive Upgrade: send us a K1200GT windshield from a competitor, and we'll credit you $60.. Cool. Contact them at Sales@CalSci.com 800-284-8112

10. You might want to pass this link on to the newbie who's looking for his first new helmet and doesn't know about sizing and getting one that really fits properly.. Remember..If the helmet doesn't fit .. you must acquit...er.. I mean... it's not gonna protect the goodies within.. Courtesy of Jay Leno

11. Many.. some.. well.. one or two of you might have enough short term memory cells still functioning to remember the blurb in our December cheesy newsletter regarding the upcoming exhaust from Laser... the Stealth. Here's a first look..(Click pic at right). We just got word that they will be in the states by Feb 10th, 2009. It will be available in an extremely light-weight full carbon version and a stainless steel version (Inox).. No retail price as of yet. To hell with Viagra. If this doesn't give you a woody then you should donate your eyes to someone who can appreciate them. I'll probably try one of these on my own bike. This "Stealth" looks beeeeeeautiful. and of course.... Pirates' Lair will have them. Will post a web page as soon as we get confirmed information and delivery dates. Stay tuned.

Got wood?!

What's New at Pirates' Lair?

1. Yea yea.. I get a lot of complaints that I haven't added any new products to our K1200RS product section. Guess a few have forgotten that the bike was discontinued FIVE years ago... Basically I have to seek out anything new to the market. With that said..here's a small bone for you RS guys/gals .. I just added Clear Rear Lenses for 1997-2004 K1200RS's from Clear Alternatives to our product line! Yes.. these are the only aftermarket rear lenses on the market for the early model K1200RSs. These are EXACT replicas of the factory lenses. We offer them in clear only. For the truly adventurous.... we also sell a front/rear Clear Lens Kit Combo package as well. Install is as easy as removing one screw and dropping them into place. These rear clear lens kits fit the R1100R, R850R, R1150GS, R1150R, R1150GS, R1200C, R1100S (Rear), and of course the 97-04 K1200RS .. for a paltry $40 a pair with Fed/Ex Ground included. The bad news is.. we can't seem to keep them in stock so be patient with us if you see them marked Temp Out of Stock.

I can see clearly now!!

2. ... still not satisfied?... here's another new K1200RS product for the menu!! We now carry the Throttlemeister for the 1998-2004 K1200RS owners out there who weren't blessed with a factory cruise control.. IMHO.. they are the best throttle-lock devices on the market. Worthy of the moto-god you wish you were.

3. Woohoo!! Somebody alert Geraldo! If you've been waiting for one of our exclusive Pirates Lair Helmet Locks.. your wait is over!! The first shipment in 8 months arrived this week!! You can find the helmet locks here... 2006-2009 K1200GT, K1200S & K1200R, 1998-2004 K1200RS/ K1200GT

4. Need more power? Are we not men? as of 1/21/09 we are now carrying the Remus PowerCone Full System for the BMW K1200S, K1200R, and K1200R Sport. Cost is a sphincter busting $1895 for Black/stainless or all Titanium, all mounting hardware, shipping and I would assume a blow job for that price. For those that absolutely, positively must have more power than they need.

5. We've been selling Clear LED Tail Lights (from Clear Alternatives) for our MV Agusta F4 / Brutale customers for a couple of years. These offer integrated blinkers. Well.. the good news is.. they are working on a RED lens version to keep the stock factory look. Same price. Same quality. Those are due to be on the market in March.

6. We just got our first shipment of Ducati 1098 License Plate Relocators made by Evoluzione . Simple and ultra-lightweight,The Ducati 1098 has one of the best looking asses out there, discounting Angelina Jolie, of course. Why have that "fugly" rear fender cluttering things up when you can have simplicity and beauty personified with this kit? Install is under 1 hour. That's about how long it took me to do mine.. And unlike other license plate relocator kits on the market, the Evo Kit allows the customer to retain the blinkers.. as God intended. Fits Ducati 1098, 1098S, 1098R, 1198, and the 848..

7. Just in time for the spring farkel rush. We recently got a rare shipment of those waaaaay cool Billet Torque Arms for the K1200S, K1200R, and R Sport. Each comes with the stylish Pirates Lair logo lovingly engraved on the side. Each arm will guarantee attention from the apposite sex..and occasionally from the same sex. Silver is SOLD OUT but we have (3) left in anodized black... I should mention .. we get perhaps 2 small shipments a year so if you are prone to procrastination...now would be the time to get over it if you've been wanting one of these.. Consider yourself forewarned, swabbie. I keeed you not.. these will transform the rear section of your bike (below the tail light) into a thing of beauty. In Stock / Limited Supply!

Do I make you horny?

Pirates Lair Sacred Archives

We get a lot of requests for specific articles and/or reviews I've written in the past. Rather than fry my aging brain trying to remember where they are on our multi-thousand page website.. I have decided to list the "worthy" ones here. Most of the links are to past newsletters.. Some are to full web articles. Remember, I'm no expert on anything except perhaps cunnilingus so the opinions within the archives are only my own. Saavy?

BMW How-To Section

We have a new offering this month from Sir Kevin Hoffberg over at his Mid-Life Rider website...
Check out his How-To Install a Bags Connection Engage Tank Bag. It's the first listing on the page. Installation was on a K1200GT. Thx Kev. Well done.
